Online Tuner for Guitar, Bass and Ukulele

Welcome to StringTune, the easiest-to-use online tuner. To start, allow access to the microphone. Play each string one at a time. The tuner will automatically detect the pitch of the note being played and indicate whether it’s sharp or flat. Keep adjusting until the tuner points directly to the center. Here are some common tuning patterns for various string instruments:

How to tune a guitar online in 3 steps

  1. Press the microphone button and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Play one open string and let it ring. The tuner detects the note and shows whether it is too low (flat) or too high (sharp).
  3. Turn the tuning peg slowly until the needle stays in the centre. Repeat for every string.

Standard guitar tuning: E A D G B E

From the thickest string (6th) to the thinnest (1st): E2 – A2 – D3 – G3 – B3 – E4. Bass guitar: E1 – A1 – D2 – G2. Ukulele: G4 – C4 – E4 – A4. Pick your instrument in the menu and the notes appear as buttons; tap one to hear its reference tone.

Tips for accurate tuning

  • Tune in a quiet room and turn off music or the TV.
  • Hold your phone or laptop close to the instrument: near the sound hole of an acoustic guitar, or near the amp speaker of an electric one.
  • Play one string at a time and mute the others with your hand.
  • Tune up to the note: if a string is too high, loosen it a little below the note, then tighten it back up.
  • Violin, viola or cello? The tuner recognises any note (violin G D A E, viola and cello C G D A).
  • Does your band tune to A4 = 442 Hz? Tap “A4 = 440 Hz” to change the reference pitch.
  • If the microphone does not start, allow it in your browser’s site settings and press the button again.
